May 2026 Meeting: NCSU Apiculture Research Happenings

At our next OCBA meeting (May 14), we are excited to have Dr. David Tarpy speak about the new North Carolina State University (NCSU) apiculture research laboratory and the endowed apiculture professorship position. The new research laboratory represents a landmark achievement of which North Carolina beekeepers should be proud.  The endowed professorship (the new goal) represents a partnership between NCSU, the NC state government and beekeepers across the state.  This endowed distinguished professorship in apiculture secures future research in our state at NCSU.  Come out to hear about the new research laboratory and the future of apiculture research at NCSU!

Dr. David Tarpy is a professor and extension apiculturist in the Department of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University, where he has led the honey bee program since 2004. Having received his doctorate in entomology from UC Davis, Dr. Tarpy is a widely recognized authority on honey bee biology.  His research focuses on the behavioral ecology and genetics of insect societies, specifically investigating the mechanisms of queen behavior and the adaptive benefits of genetic diversity within colonies. Dr. Tarpy bridges the gap between basic science and practical application by developing innovative extension initiatives, such as the Beekeeper Education & Engagement System (BEES) and the NC State Queen & Disease Clinic, t

o improve colony health and productivity. His distinguished career is marked by numerous accolades, including being the only individual to receive both of the Eastern Apicultural Society’s highest honors for teaching and research, reflecting his deep commitment to both academic excellence and the beekeeping community.
